Privacy/Top Down-Bottom Up
If privacy is a concern for you, but you don’t want to lose your view, a honeycomb shade with “Top down/Bottom up” is your answer. This allows you to either have the full window covered, (and still get lots of natural light through if you select a light diffusing fabric), or, you can lower the traveling or middle rail down to have the upper half of the window exposed, yet still have the lower have covered! Of course the entire shade will also raise all the way up to have fully exposed glass.

Specialty Shaped Windows
No question, triangles and eyebrow windows are a beautiful aspect to the design of your home, but how to control the light that comes through? A number of different shades are available in specialty shapes. Due to restrictions in regards to cords and exposed cords, these shades will more than likely be “non-operable”, but you can still cover the windows with a beautiful and elegant custom shade.
Room Darkening and Blackout Shades
Room darkening and blackout are often requested for those that work shift work and need to sleep when still light out. Depending on how light sensitive a person is, room darkening may be sufficient, or, they may need total blackout. Total blackout requires your shades to have custom channels installed all around the shade inside the window frame. As light is like water, it will “find a way”, even with channels there may be a tiny crack of light. This may have to be covered with custom drapery to get 100% blackout, but it can be done!

Child and Pet Safety
A few years ago Health Canada implemented very strict new guidelines for all Canadian window covering suppliers. Exposed cords and hanging chains are now illegal to manufacture. This was done for the safety of all our children. The suppliers have absolutely stepped up to the plate to come up with great solutions re cordless shades and motorized options. Not only are these blinds and shades completely safe to have in homes with small children, they have a much cleaner look without the hanging cords!
Energy Efficiency
Windows and doors are the biggest source of heat loss and gain in our homes. We may have brand new, top of the line windows, but they are still made of glass. All window coverings will help some to add a level of insulation, but the number one product for the best insulation will always be a Honeycomb shade. This is due to construction of the shade fabric. There are a minimum of two layers of fabric that form “cells” or “honeycombs”. These honeycombs help to trap heat and cold, keeping your home more comfortable, and your heating/cooling bills lower!

Over-Sized or Large Windows
Almost any style of shade can be done on large windows if the window has vertical mullions. We would simply do two or more shade in the window and “butt” them together. Not only can this be easier to operate, but it may be more practical if you one window is operable and you’d like to get some air flow, but not lose your privacy.
In cases where clients simply don’t want to put more than one shade in the window, there are a number of shades that can be done at extremely wide widths! Honeycomb shades, roller shades, or shutters can be done at extremely wide widths.
Garden or Sliding Doors
Garden doors can be challenging as there is often one door with a screen. As we can’t mount over that screen, we will often revert to something that will cover the entire door from above the frame. This may be two shades (one covering each door, operated independently); verticals are still available and can stack to one side; or drapery is a gorgeous way to cover doors. With the right hardware, the drapery can be pushed to either side, and drapery can really frame a beautiful doorway!

Tilt & Turn Windows
You may have these beautiful European style tilt & turn windows in your home, but how do you treat them in order to not restrict the movement of the windows?
Hunter Douglas has the best solution in their Duette Honeycomb line. These shades are attached directly to the frame of the window and move with the frame, whether tilting, or turning, the Duettes will do a wonderful job of dressing these windows.
